Answer By Allen: I’ve found that at a 14cell battery (58.8v) with my Bafang BBSHD on my fat bike gets about 1 mile per AH when doing steep offroad trails all day and honestly, this is the only time you need to know your range, in places where pedaling is going to wipe you out real quick.
Everyone gives ranges based on flat land but you can pedal your bike all day long on a flat grade. It’s the hills where the e-bike becomes necessary. Also, as people have seen, flat range estimates are enormous.

In addition, they usually give a “with peddling” number which is additionally meaningless as we have no easy to to measure how much of that range is peddling and how much is the battery.
Of course, this is all an estimate, unless you have a cycle analyst you likely aren’t measuring actual draw and can just estimate based on past trips. The weight of the bike, weight of the rider, efficiency of the motor over different conditions, friction of the bike tires, etc etc are all factors but my number is not exact anyway. Also, not everyone is running a 14-cell battery so the 1 AH = 1 mile is going to vary as well.
All that being said, I have been riding for 8 hours, already put all of myself on the trail, had a brain fart about how far I had left, and run out of battery going down a steep hill. I realized my mistake, and had to walk my bike up that steep hill. This was torture.

I then waited for 30 minutes in a parking lot while my riding partner went and got his car. Turns out his bike rack would not hold my bike so I figured I’d been resting for 30 minutes, I could ride my bike over the crest and then it was mostly downhill for me all the way home (I had ridden to the park). About 200 feet up the road I cramped up so hard I couldn’t stand. I was truly spent. I actually had to call for my brother to pick me up.
Carrying a spare or emergency battery is a good idea in a similar situation.
